CONCERT MARCHES

GRADE 1 & 1.5

6th STREET MARCH is an upbeat, moderato march - Closer to grade 1.5 due to length (70 measures). Key of Eb major, no key changes except relative C minor. Clarinet & trumpet are split. Low brass is almost all rhythmically unison. As always, I write lots of percussion but can be played with smaller sections.

WOODWINDS - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar(2), BC, AS, TS, BS.

BRASS - Trpt(2), Hn, Tbn, Euph, Tu (Low BR/WW mostly unison)

PERCUSSION- Timpani, Bells, SD, BD, Cymbal, Triangle, Tambourine

ALPHA MARCH is written for beginner band, it is closer to a Grade 1/2. It uses a very playable tune for that spring contest. It incorporates Bb & Eb mini-scales as the melodic theme (no key change!). Everyone gets a shot at the melody!

WOODWINDS - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar, BC, AS, TS, BS.

BRASS - Trpt, Hn, Tbn, Euph, Tu (Low BR/WW unison)

PERCUSSION- Bells, SD, BD, Cymbal

A VICTORY MARCH A very playable march for young players. You can see the Roman Army marching back home from "A Victory"! If you have a lot of percussion, there are plenty of parts but can be played with fewer. Moderate tempo march in Bb & Eb major. Instrumentation

WOODWIND - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Cl(2), Bc, AS, TS, BS

BRASS - Tr(2), Hn, Tb, Eu, Tu

PERC - Bells, Xylo(opt), Timp(3 dr opt), SD, BD, Tamb, Tri, Cymb.

JINGLE BELL MARCH is a fun march for all types of young bands.  At the same time, an older group could have a lot of fun bringing out many of the “hidden” parts and is easy to work up for that annual Christmas parade!

Though the main theme uses a march style of Jingle Bells, there are many other melodies used as counter melodies.  Be sure and bring out each of these on the repeats of each strain.

WOODWINDS - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar(2), BC, AS, TS, BS.

BRASS - Trpt(2), Hn, Tbn, Euph, Tu (Low BR/WW mostly unison)

PERCUSSION- Bells, SD, BD, Cymbal, Sleigh Bells, Wood Block

GRADE 2

BOWIE MARCH is a quick (120bpm) march. It should be played in a very lifted, marcato style through out. Limted syncopation in melody and accompaniment give it a energetic, moving, bouncy motion. Major key of Eb in A section - B section in F minor. Though many parts are split, they are rhythmically unison and often pitch unison. They help mostly with range.

WOODWINDS - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar(2), BC, AS(2), Ts, Bs.

BRASS - Tr(2), Hn(2), Tb(2), Eu, Tu.

PERCUSSION- Bells, SD, BD, Tamb & Cymbal.

BRANCH MARCH was written for Kay Branch. She retired in 2019 after serving as an educator and leader in Irving ISD in Texas for FIFTY years. Very playable for an intermediate group. 2/4 time signature in F-Bb-F major. There are plenty of parts for percussion but can be played with a smaller group as well.

WOODWINDS - Fl. Ob. Bsn. Clar(2), Bs Cl, AS, TS, BS

BRASS - Tr(2), Hn(2), Tb(2), Eu, Tu

PERCUSSION - Timp, Bells, Xylo, SD, BD, Tenor, Cr Cym, Tri, Tamb.

Yes! ENTRY MARCH is in Bb minor but is still very playable for a young/small band. It has a very understated melody accompanied by a bass/percussion ostinato part that builds throughout the entire march. The percussion is very repetitive with plenty of parts but can be played by a smaller section.

WOODWINDS - Fl. Ob. Bsn. Clar(2), Bs Cl, AS, TS, BS

BRASS - Tr(2), Hn, Tb(2), Eu, Tu

PERCUSSION - Timp, Bells, Marimba, SD, BD, Cymbals, Toms, Triangle

JALISCO is a nice relaxed concert march. It starts with a trumpet trio and then the melody is passed around the band through out. Instrument ranges are moderate for a 2nd-year player. Plenty of parts to please your percussion, but can be played with a smaller section.

WOODWINDS - Fl. Ob. Bsn. Clar(2), Bs Cl, AS(2), TS, BS

BRASS - Tr(2), Hn(2), Tb(2), Eu, Tu

PERCUSSION - Timp, Bells, Marimba, SD, BD, Cymbals, Castanet, Maracas, Vibra-slap

GRADE 3 & 4

HALF-STEP MARCH GRADE 4 - Fingers will fly and ears will perk up to this unique quick-step march titled “Half Step March”. As the title suggests, it is a flurry of chromatic runs and “licks” that will make your students WANT to practice, and have your audience’s toes tapping. For many, it will bring back memories of the old circus marches. You will be able to see clowns running about, trapeze artists flying around and much more. A great opener to a concert, or a quick encore piece that will leave them wanting more.

WOODWINDS - Picc. Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar(3), BC, AS(2), Ts, Bs.

BRASS - Tr(3), Hn(4), Tb(2), Eu, Tu.

PERCUSSION- Bells, Xylo, SD, BD, Cymbal.
